Studio Session

Kush & Orange Juice

The Good:

Who doesn’t love flows about fly women and the champagne lifestyle coming from an indie rapper from Pittsburgh? The production is dope (as usual). Wiz makes his life sound like one long party on this mixtape, recounting endless tales of weed smoke and pretty women. Not the deepest subject matter, but Khalifa’s easy charm, steady flow, and way with a sing-song hook make these tracks difficult to resist.

The Bad:

If you aren’t a smoker, into laid back raps on chill tracks, or rhymin over super pop tracks then this probably isn’t your steez.

The Verdict:
3 1/2 Stars

Happy 4/20

Killa & Jimmy Reunite?

Last week, Miss Info had a conversation with Pig Pen and Killa, who have apparently settled their disagreements and are moving forward in their relationship. I'm glad "Dipset' is back, they are stronger together than they could ever be solo for dolo. DIPSET, DIPSET, DIPSET!

Guru Dead at 43

Legendary rapper Guru, born Keith Elam, has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 43. According to a statement, Guru died of cancer-related causes on Monday. In February, one half of '90s rap group Gang Starr underwent surgery following a heart attack and struggled thereafter with reports of him falling in a coma before being listed as stable in early March.

The Boston born rapper, who eventually went on to rep for Brooklyn, formed the pioneering hip-hop duo in the mid-80s, teaming with DJ Premier in the late '80s. Gang Starr's debut album was 1989's 'No More Mr. Nice Guy,' and together Guru and Premier went on to release several successful albums, including the critically lauded 'Moment of Truth.' Guru stepped out on his own in 1993. His solo work includes four volumes of the Jazzmatazz series, and he later launched both Ill Kid Records and 7 Grand record labels.

Guru's longtime collaborator and friend Solaar released a statement to express his grief at the lost of the great MC. "The world has lost one of the best MCs and hip-hop icons of all-time -- my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru," Solaar wrote. "Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius."

Little Brother - LeftBack

Artist: Little Brother
Release Title: Left Back
Date Of Release: 2010
Website: http://www.myspace.com/littlebrother

Following the release of 'The Listening,' Little Brother would go on to become one of the most revered and hard-working crews around. But the trio that made Questlove pull an imaginary bop gun on nearly five million people is ending its career. The next album 'Leftback,' due April 20, will be their last.

"I want the Little Brother legacy to be one of consistency," Rapper Big Pooh told the BoomBox. "I would like to be remembered as the group that always put out great music no matter the situation."

When Pooh formed Little Brother with Phonte and producer 9th Wonder back in the late 90s, the situation was three college kids making music simply for the love of making music. The group has since been pared down to two in the wake of 9th Wonder's departure prior to the release of 2007's 'Getback,' but the love is still there, despite a myriad of personal and professional changes. Little Brother have fought mainstream media and major labels, earned the respect of both their peers and idols, and stayed gimmick-free throughout it all.

"I'd just want us to be remembered as two honest guys who had a lot of fun making the music they loved," says Phonte, who will continue his career as a guest MC and most notably, half of the Grammy-nominated Foreign Exchange duo with Dutch producer Nicolay. Leftback will feature production from fellow Justus League member Khrysis, as well as frequent Foreign Exchange collaborator Zo! and Denaun Porter. Initial pressings of the album will include a limited-edition, bonus feature DVD. Created documentary style, the DVD will showcase recent tours and exclusive Little Brother archival career footage. "I wanted to walk away from Little Brother knowing that I gave our fans all that I had to give and said everything I wanted to say," Phonte explains. "With 'Leftback,' I've done that."

As for Pooh's future, he says "I plan on building my solo brand through music and other ventures, with a solo album coming this fall entitled 'Dirty Pretty Things.'" The pair will embark on tour once 'Leftback' is released, giving fans one last opportunity to see Little Brother in the flesh. The importance of performing live is just one of many lessons Phonte and Pooh have learned along the way, which makes them well-prepared for the future.

"The most important thing I have probably learned is you have to keep working at your craft," says Pooh. "Saying you're the best is one thing, but being the best takes a lot of hard work."

"No one will work harder for you than you will for yourself," Phonte adds. "If you don't have moments where you feel like quitting, then you ain't working hard enough."

Roll Tide Roll

Alabama 37 Texas 21

Colt McCoy, who had returned to Texas for his senior season with the lone goal of leading the Longhorns to a national championship, could only watch as their valiant comeback fell short in a 37-21 loss to the Crimson Tide.
After minutes into the game; McCoy spent the rest of the evening icing his right shoulder, trying to regain his arm strength after taking a jarring hit from Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus while running an option play on Texas' fifth offensive play of the game.

It Doesn't Work....

After spending 5 hrs(how ironic) in the studio recording & mixing down vocals for the People Are People LP; I decided to take a 30min intermission to run to the cornerstore & grab a few things.. As I'm approaching the cashier; a bag of white cheedar popcorn in one hand, gatorade in the other, I NOTICED that they sell those 5-hour energy drinks that I've seen on commericals.. A curious mind wonders curious things, so I buy one hoping it would give me a boost of energy I needed.

As I crank up the whip I start drinking the energy drink, 5mins go by... still dont feel any different... 5 more mins go by I still nothing....I waited and waited and waited but no energy boost. I just wasted 4 bucks for buying that mess and time for actually waiting for this magical boost of energy to kick in. Smh

People Are People LP … dropping later this year.

BILLY THE ARTIST

The fusion of art and fashion. Here are brand new limited edition timepieces by Billy the Artist for the Swatch CreArt Collection launching earlier last week. Originated in 1986 with pieces designed by famed artist Keith Haring, this collection introduces a mainstream audience to the world of abstract creativity by giving consumers the opportunity to purchase “wearable” art.
In what he calls “Urban Primitive,” Billy the Artist specializes in modern day pop art – a kaleidoscope of puzzle-like images that celebrate the diversity and joy of the human spirit. His bold, distinctive style moves easily from art galleries to commercial venues and from small-scale projects to enormous urban murals. His signature approach to design can be discerned in the two pieces he has created for Swatch, which are aptly named ‘Afterdark‘ and ‘Morning Glow‘. Both pieces encapsulate the idea of the joy of life through vibrant colors and distinct visual designs

“My philosophies are to ‘create your own reality and no plan B’. I think my watches with their wide open eyes and playful spirit represent that. When people are wearing my watches and look down at them I want them to feel that positive happy spirit that is awake in my art and my spirit.” – Billy The Artist

Meet Paul Leli

Meet Paul Leli. Remember the super talented Toronto based artist who painted Lil Wayne with his Grammy Award? Weezy liked it so much it’s hanging in his condo in Miami (pictured below).
Paul’s at it again, but this time for T.O.’s own Drizzy Drake.

KANYE x LOUIS VUITTON SNEAKERS

As time winds down for the release of the anticipated Kanye x LV sneaker collaboration more pics have surfaced the web of the actual shoes. The quality seems to be precise and looking better made than the average pair of sneakers but will the high price points of Louis Vuitton drive away the sneaker collecting consumers? You be the judge.
